Join us for our Introduction to Packing Course at the Hermosa Field Station in the heart of the Gila Wilderness. This immersive weekend course runs from Friday at noon through Sunday at 2:00 PM, with all meals included throughout the weekend.
Designed for beginners and outdoor enthusiasts alike, this hands-on course introduces participants to the fundamentals of wilderness packing using stock animals. You’ll learn the basics of mule handling, packing equipment, load balancing, trail safety, knot tying, and backcountry travel techniques. Participants will gain practical experience working directly with our own experienced pack mules while exploring the unique landscape of the Gila.
Whether you’re interested in backcountry travel, outdoor leadership, or simply learning a traditional wilderness skill, this course offers a fun and educational introduction in a beautiful, remote setting.
